During WWII, did the Red Army effectively use land mines to defend against the Nazi blitzkrieg strategy?
What types of land mines did the Soviets have? Were they any good? Did the production and tactical use of land mines improve during the course of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union?
That is a very good question. I can’t produce any documents that show they were used. Discussion on land mines would be below the command level possibly at the division level which I have no source. All I really have-that I can prove-is comments from General Warlimont memoirs in which he describes the land mine set up at Rastenburg. He noted that partisan groups were able to disarm and rebuild the land mines used for outer defenses at the Goerlitz forest. So, basically all I can prove is the Red Army rebuilt the Schu-mine 42-which is a very simple devise.
