Were the Spartan soldiers completely cut off from their families?
Hi, I’m doing a project for my World History class, and I came up with a question when we went over the typical Spartan man’s childhood.
In the armies, were men completely cut off from their families with no communication at all?
Letters, visits, anything? Thanks for your time! 
Here’s one account (I fixed the grammar in some of it):
“All Spartanian newborns had to be checked over by a “clan senior” who rejected all weak or deformed children and commanded them to be thrown down a cliff. Spartan boys who successfully survived the newborn test were, at age 7 or 8, taken away from parents and placed in groups.
From age 13, they were given, each year, new and more rigorous, often brutal, training. In no other Greek state were boys separated from their families like here. At 20 years of age the young men received a degree of Eiren and served in the army, but the status of full-fledged citizen was not yet achieved.
At the age of 30, men were allowed to attend parliament. Those reticent obedient, and brutal young men did not worked, just occupy their minds with training and fights. Their lived and fights only between the soldiers, and this dark, salt-less life with the only aim to survive, fight for national concerns, met from the “Best Soldiers of the Greece”.
Of those consequences was progerss of particular king of homosexuality. Same as in other places in Sparta was fully approved relationship between lover (erastes) and favourite (eromenos). In Sparta the status of Lover was almost official position. Despite prevailing homosexuality it was expected from Spartanian to merry a woman in age around 20.
The barrack style of life implicated that their wives were isolated in most of their time but due this consequences they had more freedom then nay other women in Greece.”
