Army Spring

Learn How To Let Go
Each time the spring season comes around, do you take on a vow to do a thorough cleaning of your home, only to find yourself in an act of self-sabotage?
You start weeding through closets and shelves, imagining by the end of the process you’ll have a huge pile of yard sale merchandise and donations for the Salvation Army. But what you actually have in the end is a pile of nothing. That alpine skiing equipment is still crammed into the back end of the closet (even though you haven’t gone skiing in twenty years). There’s a dilapidated piano keyboard that you were hoping to fix one day. There’s the VCR that still works, even though you’ve got two DVD players in the house.
It’s boggling that we can be so quick to accumulate objects and things, and yet so unwilling to let go of them even when they are not relevant to our lives anymore.
There is something to be said of course, for keeping things that have sentimental value – but only when it is a manageable amount. If you’re finding that you’re tripping over things in your living room, or that there’s not even any free space in your closets for your own clothes, it’s time to reassess your hoarding habits. It’s time to break free from the debilitating habit of being a packrat.
First and foremost, disengage your emotions from your clutter. See it for exactly what it is and how it serves any purpose to you. The reason you bought these items in the first place is because they stood to be of use at the time. But are they of any use any more? What good are they if they have no real function in your life? A dilapidated tandem stroller might have practical when your kids were younger, but does it do anything more for you now except serve as proof for time that has already passed? Toss it out.
Also remember that letting go of a three dimensional object that you can hold in your hands doesn’t mean that you can’t preserve the precious memories that it stands for. If you’re so connected to certain objects, take a photo of it! Keep a visual diary that can be catalogued onto a computer and printed when you want a copy. As for the mounds of yellowing paperbacks, consolidate all their value into a digital book reader and donate the rest to your local library.
Abandoning your packrat tendencies might seem scary at first, especially when you’ve been at it a long time, but think about how it conflicts with the practicalities of your everyday life. Learn to be objective and depend on yourself for happiness rather than on tangible items.
