CG-5 Lock levers Needed for alignment?
i own a cg-5 and the RA axis floats freely when the lock lever is lose, but when i loosen the lock lever on the DEC axis i can feel resistance. So when i set up to align i let the levers lose and the DEC works fine that way, but the RA doesn’t move till the lever is tight. I know its supposed to be tight for long exposures but does it need to be tight all the time?
Yes it needs to be tight or it wont be able to move with the drive motor in either axis.
There is some resistance to move it but it will float if its not locked. I got the C10-NGT back in February and the resistance that you feel on the RA irritated me beyond belief when I was trying to get a good balance.
If you are new to EQ mounts… Make sure you speed plenty of time balancing.. If it is not balanced it will put a lot of strain on both the gears and motor(s). It is a lot of money to send to celestron to fix also.
There are sites that show how to change the factory “bearings and grease” to make them move more freely, but I am not about to do maintenance work on a $700 mount that’s new.
The mount overall is OK… I think the C10 that comes with it might be about 5-10 lbs over the ideal weight. The fraction that the DEC and RA have with one another is irritating at times… Also the limited scope for polar alt mean I have to angle the scope forward for polar alignment because I life in Florida.
