Baby Sunfish
Could i keep baby sunfish in a 10 gallon tank?
For my biology project, i am wanting to take baby sunfish (or pumpkinseed fish approx: 2-3″ long max) from our school pond ( this is allowed and legal) and raise them in a 10 gallon filtered/heated tank. They are living in pretty cold water conditions in their natural environment as it is now, so im not sure the heater is necessary, but anyway, i would only be keeping them for about 5 months, and then releasing them. We want to see if we can mimic their habitat and what not, and see if they will be able to thrive the environment we create. Would 5 or 6 two inch baby sunfish be ok in a 10 gallon tank for around 5 months? any tips on what you would do? or think i should do? i have kept freshwater fish for years, just nothing from the wild. Thanks in advance for all your help….
bad idea….
first no way in regards to bio-load that tank is useless. Those fish are to big.
Second if they do you live they will die the second you release them because they will have no idea how to hunt for food naturally.
If you want a project find out why mollies are one of the only fish that can live in salt and freshwater. Put each one in a 2.5 gallon bowl, one salt and one fresh and explain
when your done with the project you can put both of those in your 10 gallon no problem.
