Removing rust from a old saw blade?
Hi, I’m working on getting rid of rust off an antique 2-man saw.
The rust is pretty caked on, with a grinder, ive been able to get rid of most of the rust on one side.
However, there are still black spots on the metal. Is that rust or just stains to the metal? Whats the best way to get it smoothed down and also protect it once Ive removed all the dust?
Old metal can be stained by the rust over time. If you have all of the visible rust off, and the metal is not pitted, the spots will not spread. After you have it to this point, rub it down with a rifle solvent like Hoppes #9. (you can get it at any sporting goods store) Wipe it down one last time and then rub it with some oil. (Not cooking oil) The oil will protect the blade from moisture. Lightly oil the blade after each use, and at least once a year if you don’t use it.
