Old-school Safety Razors: The Better Way to Shave

This is for all men who are not currently touring with the Grateful Dead:

You do not know how to shave.

The typical morning shave goes like this: wake up, drag a plastic, 5-blade cartridge razor over your face and walk away with razor burn and stubble by 5pm. We were told this is the way. And if you want a better shave maybe there will be a new 6-blade razor coming soon.

I thought this was the only game in town, too, until quite by accident, I stumbled on a new shaving technique. Actually it’s an older way–and some say, far better.

There is a better way to shave than using the typical cartridge razors.

I live in Japan in a small country town. And when I first got here and needed a haircut, I was pointed towards the local barber, complete with the red and white barber pole out front and those big, comfy barbershop chairs inside. The barber cut my hair and just as I was about to get up he reclined the chair so I was nearly horizontal to the ground. Perfect nap position.

I played along thinking this was some bit of Japanese post-haircut etiquette I knew nothing about. He then put a hot towel on my neck and face. It was hot, but not too hot. He left it there for a few minutes and then replaced it with another hot towel. At this point my face was nice and warm and I was very relaxed and starting to guess he was going to give me a shave.

He put shaving cream on with a brush, then used a small, black razor to shave my face. It was the first time I’d ever had a true barbershop style shave and was worried he was going to slip up and cut me. I was tense at first, but soon relaxed and let him do his thing.

It wasn’t until I got home that I realized that he’d given me the closest shave I’ve ever had. There wasn’t that little-bit-of-stubble-left-over feeling. Wow.

Even the next morning my face was still relatively smooth. About as smooth as my typical cartridge razor shave. I didn’t shave that day.

I found out later that he’d used a double edge safety razor.

As you can imagine I went out and bought a double edge adjustable safety razor the next day. It took a little getting used to at first, sort of like driving a fine Italian sports car compared to a Honda Civic. But once you learn how to drive it, you’ll never go back.

It’s nice to know there is a better way to shave.
