Where do I go to learn how to make knives?
I live in Colorado Springs, CO (and Greeley, CO, depending on the time of year). I have been thinking for some time that I would like to learn how to forge knives and other bladed weapons, and was wondering how and where I could get started.
Many blade smiths/knifemakers are self taught including myself. You can start by purchasing various books on the subject as well as joining forums such as www.bladeforums.com. Forging is not the only method of making them and it makes you limited to inferior steels if you go that route.
If you have the funds, going to a school on the subject is a possibility though. The only school I know of is Abs School of Bladesmithing.
EDIT: Elyas-use a bit of common sense. There are thousands of people that are still interested in crafts/arts and what do you think he’d use a knife for? It’s a everyday tool just like a hammer,screwdriver, etc. The majority of knives are not designed as weapons and the people that makes them are not interested in using them as weapons. It is incrediably ignorant of you to ask if somebody is going to become a “rowdy” just because they want to make what is probably the most useful tool in the world. I’d like you see you cut open a package,skin a deer, prepare food, etc with your computer. Tell us how it goes! Oh yeah..and thinking about factory knives? Not everybody likes using inferior factory knives-most have horrid steels, poor edge geometry, lack of proper heat treatment, poor fit/finish, dull factory edges, improper balance, overly thick, etc. And they most certainly do NOT appreciate in price no matter how much hype the manufacturer places on them. Go to the Factory vs. Handmade section of Jay Fisher’s website and educate yourself.
