Is it my imagination or were Tim McCarver and Joe Buck rooting for the Rangers?
I think it was your imagination.
They weren’t rooting for the Rangers so much as they were working to maintain the excitement in the game. When it’s a 3-1 game in the late innings, you do that by pointing out opportunities that the trailing team has to tie things up. If the Giants had been behind, you would have heard them doing the same thing concerning the Giants.
Also, announcers want to call exciting moments. If you’re a broadcaster, you want to have the opportunity to call “…behind the bag….IT GETS BY BUCKNER!” or “I don’t believe what I JUST SAW” when Gibson hit the home run in game 1 back in 1988. Those are the calls that get played 50 years after you’re gone.
