Does anyone know how much FedEX pays per flight for deliveries?
I’m having a debate with a friend. My contention is this: I’m guesstimating that on an average FedEx MD-11 transport there are 8000 packages (based on the MD-11′s 200,000 pounds capacity and figuring the average package to be 25#). I’m further guessing that 8000 packages at an average cost of 50 bucks puts the net take at a approx 400,000. Now..after paying the pilot, copilot, groundcrews and fuel….which I’ll guess at 150K per flight..FedEx rakes in about a quarter of a mil every time one of their cargo planes moves. My friend thinks I’m WAY over. I think it’s actually conservative based on the fact that Fedex must maximize their cube and probably have a LOT more than 8000 packages on board. Thoughts or any impirical wisom????
You left out a ton of expenses like maintenance personnel, ground crew, parts, airport landing fees, etc. etc. And don’t forget that it isn’t just the flight, they have to pick up the package, take it to the processing center, get it sorted, taken to the airport, put on the plane, then the reverse to deliver it, so now you have two sets of handling personnel, two sets of truck drivers, two sets of trucks, and two time the truck maintenance, fuel, insurance, employee benefits, etc., etc. They’re making money, no doubt, but not like you’re thinking.
