Fun Things to Do in Elizabethton, Tennessee!

A serene thirty minute drive from Sugar Hollow Retreat lies the historically rich town of Elizabethton, Tennessee.  Founded by pioneers in the 1760s, the Watauga Settlements were the first permanent settlement outside the original thirteen colonies and later became Elizabethton, Tennessee. The small settlement also was the site of the purchase from the Cherokees in 1775 by Richard Henderson of the Transylvania Company of 20 million acres in present-day Tennessee and Kentucky for ten thousand pounds sterling and trinkets, the largest land sale in American history.   If you are looking to delve into the story behind the famous purchase, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Site is a critical destination. The site hosts numerous celebrations in honor of the Over Mountain Men who traipsed 296 miles through the mountains to the Battle of Kings Mountain in October 1780, perhaps the most significant victory during the American Revolution.  The patriots suffered 28 killed and 62 wounded, whereas the British sustained 300 killed and 600 captured.  Fort Watauga is a recently reclaimed fort used for protection against the Indians and is open to the public in the confines of Sycamore Shoals Historic Site. If historical sites and shopping are not in your realm of interest, the Municipal Golf Course might entice you for a day of golfing. The public course was renovated in 1993.  Whatever your interests, Elizabethton is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Historic Milligan College is only a short drive southwest of Elizabethton. Milligan was founded in 1866 as a private secondary school based on Christian principles called Buffalo Male and Female Institute, a rare feat in its time.  It became a college in 1882 and was renamed Milligan College in 1885 to honor one of its professors, Dr. Robert Milligan, unusual in that it was not named for a founder nor for its location.

Another noteworthy Elizabethton landmark is the Doe River Wooden Covered Bridge, constructed in 1882 on the outskirts of downtown.  The bridge lies adjacent to a scenic city park and is open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.  Walking tour booklets of the historic downtown are available through the Chamber of Commerce.  Yet another must-see is the Carter Mansion which was built in 1796 by John Carter, a patriot during the Revolution, which is the oldest frame house in Tennessee.  Guests can tour this remarkable piece of history in the summer months by appointment.

Downtown Elizabethton is not only acknowledged for its historical significance, but also for its antique and specialty shops running along Elk Avenue.  The Corner Nest Antique Mall is highly recommended for antique enthusiasts is an exciting starting point.

If adventure is your quest, the Watauga River hosts river rafting, canoeing, and kayaking of the first order with Class I-II rapids below the Wilbur Dam of Watauga Lake or up to Class V rapids above the lake through the Watauga River canyon. The nearby Nolichuchy River offers another option.  Caving and rock climbing are also available.  Roan Mountain State Park is nationally famous for its rhododendron blossoms in June.  And never forget the changing color of the leaves in Autumn.  Sugar Hollow Retreat is a place to remember to enjoy each and every opportunity in the mountains of Northeastern Tennessee.

Wooden Boat Renovation: New Life for Old Boats Using Modern Methods

Wooden Boat Renovation: New Life for Old Boats Using Modern Methods

$17.51

This book is about fixing up old boats made of wood. For many people, a boat isn’t a boat unless it’s made of wood. The psychological and philosophical reasons for needing to own a boat made from honest trees instead of the material that L. Francis Herreshoff characterized as “frozen snot” needn’t concern us. But in this day and age, hard-nosed economics and the ubiquitous bottom line certainly sh…
