White Fur Blankets and Sheepskin Pillows

People have been using animal furs in various ways to keep warm and comfortable throughout all of human history. Initially, humans used animal furs to keep warm during the winter and clothe themselves. If it weren’t for animal furs, most of the northern nomadic human tribes would not have survived and we would all have lived near the equator.

As civilizations progressed and advancements were made in heating and clothing, animal furs were no longer necessary for survival and became objects that signaled a higher economic status. The British royal family still claims exclusive rights to the white fur of the ermine. A white fur blanket can cost hundreds or, in some cases, even thousands of dollars. The British Royal Guard uses bear fur for their hats. Real animal fur items are worth a lot more than imitation fur items which are made up of various synthetic fabrics and are not biodegradable as is the genuine article.

Animal furs are still used to create blankets, pillows and just about any other cloth items you can think of. Most people thoroughly enjoy animal fur items because they are very soft and make for comfortable sleeping and living environments. The luxurious style and status symbol of real animal fur is also a big plus to many people looking to deck out their home.

Fur was a major export in Russia during the Middle Ages. Most of the furs exported were martens, wolves, beavers, and foxes. When Russia was able to move into Siberia during the sixteenth and seventeenth century they were able to start hunting the Arctic fox, lynx, sea otter, and ermine. Sea otter pelts were especially profitable due to their rarity and caused Russia to move into what is now Alaska in search of more sea otter pelts. Between the late seventeenth century and the early nineteenth century Russia was the largest fur supplier in the world.

In the early years of the United States the fur trade was one of the main forms of contact between America and Europe. Europe had a high demand for beaver, sea otter, buffalo, bear, skunk, and ermine pelts. There are many laws and licensing requirements for trappers looking to get into the fur trade today, which have been brought about to keep the animals from becoming endangered of extinction. There are still eighty thousand trappers in Canada today.

Furs are beautiful, soft, and a very comfortable method of keeping warm. Although they are now considered a regal delicacy, there are affordable furs for people of every economic status. Just make sure you’re not buying faux fur or any other type of euphemism that is meant to confuse you into purchasing fake fur.
