What is a good universal cleaning kit for firearms?
I am a new shooter and am looking for a universal cleaning kit for my .22 rifle, as well as a 9 mm and/or .40 cal pistol depending on which one I pick up. I was looking at the Hoppe’s Premium Universal Soft Sided Field Gun Cleaning Kit. Is this any good? Is there any other you would recommend?
The kit really doesn’t matter as long as you have the right size brushes, jags, and slotted tip. Just make sure you get some decent patches, a decent bore cleaner (solvent), gun oil, and grease. CLP is a good cleaner and lub, but not great at either. Hoppes has been a mainstay for decades, but it stinks. I prefer M-Pro 7 (http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=4&categoryId=17544&categoryString=655***20763***678***19868***&brandId=1937 ). It doesn’t stink, its not harsh, and I haven’t found anything that cleans better.
I use Slip 2000 for gun oil (http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=4&categoryId=17542&categoryString=655***20763***678***19867***&brandId=2433 ) and Tetra Grease where there is metal/metal friction (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=133862 ).
That is what I use but there are many good brands. Going to a site like Midway USA and reading peoples ratings and comments will give you a lot of info.
