What round would work best with my Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308?
Im looking at using this weapon to hunt and to plink. I might even do a little varmint hunting with it, lol. Im serious about the varmint hunting. I plan on hunting deer which in Kansas will be at close range. For targets Id like something that can reach out a fair distance. What are my best bets for ammo on the three different uses?
Each rifle is different and their performance with a given ammunition may vary from the results achieved with someone else’s rifle.
Try a several samples (one box of 20 cartridges) of ammunition to determine how it performs in your rifle. Yes, there are plenty to choose from and the testing could become expensive. But proper testing will provide you with the results you need to make your evaluations (and write them down in a notebook dedicated to your rifle).
For .308 Winchester cartridges….
Deer hunting is often done with bullets weighing 150 grains
Varmint hunting is done with lighter bullets weighing less than 150 grains and designed for quick expansion.
Big game hunting may use bullets weighing 180 grains or more
Target practice and plinking can be done with all of the above, but usually is done with full-metal-jacket bullets weighing 147 – 150 grains.

Edited to add: Like BigBadWolf wrote, premium match-grade ammunition is likely to yield the best results during serious target shooting situation. But people who enter serious shooting competitions usually handload their cartridges to find out exactly what combination of primer, case, powder and bullet works best for a specific rifle. Not everyone is as devoted to spending such resources & effort.
