How does the Kabar Next Gen Knives Compare to the Original Kabar?
I have an original USN Kabar that one of my dad’s friends in the military gave me. It is the Iraqi Commemorative Version, and is a very beautiful knife. He also gave me a display case for it, and I keep it there because I have several other fixed blades that I would rather use than the Kabar because I want it simply as a show knife. I would like to get a Kabar to carry with me camping/hiking, and I was particularly looking at the Next Generation ones, straight edge with the plastic sheath. I was wondering how this one is compared to the original, I know the original is 1095 carbon and the new one is 440A stainless but was wondering, other than steel type, if it still holds up to the Kabar legacy or if I should just get an original.
I don’t have any experience with the Next Gen Ka-Bar’s, but they look like they’d handle very similar to the older designs. The older style Ka-Bar’s are also available with kraton handles and nylon sheaths, but keep the 1095 steel if that’s what you’d prefer (it’s probably what I’d go for).
EDIT: David; you would also take a smaller pocket-knife, and/or a multi-function tool, and yes, they’ll be used for most tasks… but when it comes to splitting logs for firewood (not all us like to carry the extra-weight or create the waste that gas/fuel powered stoves create; or we may need a bigger fire to keep warm/dry clothes etc.), collecting materials to build a shelter (again, a tent is not only extra weight, but why would you go out to these beautiful places and spend your time in a nylon ‘cell’?!) or butchering deer (if you’re also hunting), then a larger, heavier knife (like the Ka-Bar) should also be part of your tool-kit. ‘Backpacking’ isn’t really the same as ‘camping’; and yes, for backpacking; tents, stoves, ‘instant’ meals and smaller knives are all benefits.
