Damascus Baby
Damascus blades question?
Im thinking about getting a katana, and this one (http://www.handmadesword.com/648.html ) looks really cool. However it says it is a damascus blade, and im kind of confused about that. I understand that that means the blade is folded until its hard, but what kind of steel is it that it is actually folded? Is it as good as carbon steel 1095? I dont know, damascus sounds Israeli, and it sounds much cooler to say “Its carbon steel 1095 baby!” then damascus. Please clear this up for me.

Well…let me preface this post by saying that I am not a fan of Handmadesword…at all…
Now that that is off my chest…
Calling forge folded steel “damascus” is similar to calling all seafood “shrimp”. Damascus is, as one would guess, from the middle east. It was originally made of crucible steels, and is a term that occurs alongside wootz. It’s certainly not a term applicable to all forge folded/welded steels by a long shot. Something that seriously muddies the water is the fact that the term “damascus” has been used to such lengths by contemporary knife makers, where “pattern welded” should have been used in it’s place.
As far as folding goes, that is not what makes a blade hard.
Originally, folding metals only served to spread out impurities, distribute carbon, and make a more homogeneous steel. That helps make a steel more even along it’s length as opposed to having pockets here and there of too much carbon or large inclusions of impurities all stuck in one place. What actually makes a blade hard is when the steel is heated to a near “critical” temperature, then quenched in water/oil/brine in order to rapidly cool the metal. It is this cooling process that alters the crystalline structure of the steel, hardening it through creating these new structures.
This particular sword is probably forge folded 1065, but Handmadesword has this habit of either putting nothing, or putting whatever seems like it will sell in the description.
I would personally buy something different, myself. Something that could be researched and verified more easily. It’s good to actually KNOW what you’re getting than having to guess at what you’re getting.
