The march of progress and time have given the medical field multi-syllable terms for general office hours and the flu. In a documentary concerning an urbanized city, a doctor describes the early days of doctors in the area. History shows that the first immigrant to come to the city was a physician. The doctor of the day was traveling by on an journey of discovery about this city. Of course, he didn’t find enough customers to support a practice, so he returned to his home where the larger population allowed him to have a lucrative practice.
At that time in history there were quite a few physicians in the area already, but they were having a tough time making a living in an area that had few people there and money was definitely scarce. They gave up their practices when the Civil War broke out and then left the area. Doctors in this locale in the 1800′s were referred to as the best under-appreciated heroes of their day. Back in those days it took a young man with a lot of grit to enter the field of medicine. There were no set hours, the job was difficult, and pay was not consistent. There were some patients who could afford to pay, but the majority of them could not.
And it was the fortunate doctor who was able to get a few, good nights of sleep without being awakened to attend to a sick patient. A doctor’s door could be knocked on any hour of the night, and the sound of hurried feet and the calling of the doctor often interrupted sleep for many. These 19th century doctors did not always receive cash for their services. They often offered the doctor whatever crop they grew, or worked for the doctor until the bill was paid in full. Early physicians didn’t enjoy high salaries, and some of the more innovative ones made and sold their own home-made medicines for extra cash. This 19th century physician is one who tried his hand at this.
Before the days of strict government regulations, there were particularly well-educated physicians who set their own ethics aside to brew up homemade potions and cures. In fact, he found some success with his treatment for headaches and neuralgia. For the sum of 10 cents, the patient would get three doses of the treatment and the promise that his pain would stop in less then 20 minutes.
Other physicians earned some extra cash through starting their own drug stores. A particularly enterprising doctor introduced the first drug store to town and cleverly positioned it on a main street. Seeing how successful it was, three additional doctors opened up their proprietary drug stores as well. After the first hospital in the area was built, doctors started to enjoy an improved working environment, and more hospitals were built in the next few years. The medical community came to have increased professionalism, with its own motto and code of conduct, along with better facilities and education.
