Double Bolster
Which Double-Major for Law School?
I’m currently a sophomore in college, and am planning on attending law school when I graduate. My major is in Economics, and I am trying to pick a double major, just to bolster my chances of getting in a good law school.
Will double majoring help? I’m thinking of adding either Political Science, Philosophy, English, or Journalism. Would it be better to just do a major and then two minors to expand my horizons further?
Also, I haven’t gotten involved in many extra-curriculars since Ive started college (aside from intramural sports…). Is this really important for admissions to law school? If so, what are some things I could do to increase my chances of getting into a good law school?

I’m in the Honors College, and have around a 3.7 GPA (hoping to raise this significantly) right now.
I am a retired lawyer. I graduated from a top ten law school, although my undergraduate school did not have a national ranking.
You have a very good chance of being admitted to a top law school if you can maintain or raise your GPA and earn good LSAT scores.
You only need one extracurricular activity, if any, for most law schools. Debate team and Model United Nations are two good ones. An editorship on a college newspaper or magazine is also good.
Ideally. you need at least one outstanding letter of recommendation from a professor in your major, along the lines of ” (Name) is the most brilliant student whom I have taught in the last ten years. He/She has———————-.” Try to take more than one class from a professor who likes you and gives you straight A grades. Visit this professor in office hours. Volunteer to do research for this professor–it does not matter if your offer to do research is declined as some professors don’t need any undergraduate research assitstants.
Lawyers spend most of their time reading and writing, despite what is shown on TV. The best double major would be one that requires a lot of reading and writing. I took a single major in history and no minor, as no minor was required. Historians are trained to think in much the same way lawyers are. In both fields we read facts, evaluate them in the context of other facts or of the law, form conclusions and argue in writing as to why our conclusions are correct.
