Firefighter Red
Can volunteer firefighters in WI only have red for lights on their vehicles?
My friend wants to be a cop eventually and wants to be a volunteer fire fighter. He wants to put lights on his car for being a cop (when he becomes one) which would be red and blue in color. However, for the fire department he also wants to have lights on his car (as he needs to respond to calls) and was wondering if it was against rules that he was not aware of that fire fighters can only have red colored lights. Is there anything that specifies vol fire fighters can only have red lights on their cars?

“347.25 Special warning lamps on vehicles.
(1) Except as provided in subs. (1m) (a), (1r), and (1s), an authorized emergency vehicle may be equipped with one or more flashing, oscillating, or rotating red lights….
(1m) (a) A police vehicle under s. 340.01 (3) (a) may be equipped with a blue light and a red light which are flashing, oscillating or rotating.”

“The department you work for would have to authorize it. There are only two situations where that happens-
- High ranking- Chief, Deputy Chief, etc or special unit- SWAT, Negotiator, Detective, etc
- Small department that needs the ability to recall off-duty officers in emergencies due to staffing levels.
That being said your motivations for joining law enforcement, or any other emergency service is questionable. Emergency lights are a TOOL to help emergency responders do their job and having them is a PRIVILEGE. They are NOT a TOY. In fact they are often a double edged sword- while they allow us to perform our jobs quicker, they can cause injury and/or death if misused.
An off-duty officer who see’s a situation such as a suspected drunk driver should follow in a SAFE manor and call 911 to have an on-duty unit respond and make the stop. Off-duty officers should only attempt to stop a vehicle as a last resort in a situation where the safety of the public is in serious jeopardy (i.e. drunk driving on a busy sidewalk).
