TIPS AND TRICKS FOR CLEANING CARPETS
Carpet cleaning isn’t the most glamorous topic for discussion but it’s one of those necessities that just about everyone has to deal with.
Believe it or not, there was huge customer resistance to the early Hoover vacuum cleaners because people were insulted by the idea that their carpets could hold so much dirt and they refused to believe the salesmen!.
Where would we be without them?! For one thing, they wouldn’t last very long at all and plus they’d carry a lot of dirt and bad bugs making them into very unhealthy surfaces (studies show that several kilograms of soil can accumulate in a carpet over one year!)
With regular cleaning, carpets will not only last longer but retain their good looks too. Ideally, carpets should be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months but there are loads of tips and tricks for home maintenance that will keep things in tip-top shape (even in the face of active kids, busy lives and the occasional red wine spill!).
The first – and most obvious – rule of carpet care is to ensure the carpet is vacuumed regularly. Areas that get the most traffic will need to be vacuumed more often than the less busy areas. When vacuuming, try to move the brush over the carpet in a number of different areas in order to collect all the debris.
Another rule is to tackle spills immediately. Regardless of whether the spill is wet or dry ie a clump of dry soil or a glass of juice, it should be sorted out as quickly as possible to avoid staining and damage. In the case of dry spills, dirt can get ground deep into the fibres of the carpet where it can cause long-lasting stains. Also, when the carpet fibres are clear of dirt, air can circulate around them enabling them to ‘breathe’.
Immediate action is best when there’s been a spill of any type of liquid. Blot off all the excess liquid with dry paper towel or a clean white cloth. Always work from the outside in to avoid spreading the stain. To clean any persistent stain, dab at the stain with a clean damp cloth soaked in warm water but avoid over-soaking the area. Another option is to make up a solution of warm water and vinegar (or dish washing liquid), and test it first on an area of carpet that can’t be seen before trying it on the stain.
Then place a dry cloth, towel or stack of kitchen paper over the damp area, weight it down with something heavy (not books for obvious reasons) and leave it overnight to draw up any residual liquid.
Using a circular motion to clean the area could damage the carpet and make the stain worse, and it’s best not to rub or scrub vigorously – rather dab gently.
If the stain doesn’t come out, rather call in professional cleaners for their expert help.
One of the established Perth flooring and carpet suppliers, Integrity Carpets, had some additional tips to offer:
· Chewing gum can be removed from carpets by first placing an ice cube on the gum to firm it up. You can then pick off the hard pieces and finally remove any stubborn bits with a spot remover.
· When it comes to red wine spills, quickly put some soda water (or soda bicarbonate and water) onto the stain followed by table salt which should absorb the liquid.
· Candlewax can be removed by placing a brown paper bag (not newspaper as the ink could transfer to the carpet) onto the spot and put a warm/hot iron over it. The wax will be absorbed by the paper – repeat process if necessary.
Not all carpets are the same and it’s always best to discuss cleaning options with the supplier/installer so that the carpet or carpet tiles can be maintained in tip-top condition.
