Do chickens make good pets?
I have three dogs (two golden retrievers and one German Sheppard (Is this the correct spelling?)), two outdoor cats, one hamster, a lizard, and I’m planning on getting a fish. I’m 12 years old in a family of five in Little Silver, NJ (relatively calm streets, average population). We’ve had a rooster when I was about 5 but then we gave it to my aunt who owns a farm. His name was Lucky because we raised him from an egg with 11 other eggs. They were all in a defective incubator so only one hatched. However, that was when we only had one dog, a lizard, and three indoor cats… Are chickens right for us?
Chickens can be good pets, but here’s some advice:
1. Only get one. It will bond with you more fully if it’s the only chicken. Multiple chickens sometimes bond with each other only and regard the human (you) as an intruder and a possible threat.
2. Raise the chicken from a very young age. The younger, the better. Birds in general bond with people that have raised them from a very young age. If I were you, I’d incubate a chicken egg and be there when it hatches.
3. Give your chicken plenty of socialization time. Birds can get mad when they’re ignored or marginalized.
