Magpul M16 Stocks
Magpul have an enviable reputation wherever AR series weapons are employed. Their range of stocks has achieved widespread acceptance by the world’s militaries and the British Armed MoD have just switched to the Magpul 30 round STANAG magazine from an excellent, but much heavier H&K mag. With the widespread purchase of accessories by military personnel and the boom in AR15 self-builds, Magpul stocks have become very popular.
The least expensive stock in the Magpul range is the Magpul MOE stock or ‘Magpul Original Equipment’. This is a rugged, simple stock that allows the operator a much better cheek-weld than the issue item. Sling mounting options include four slits for the standard width military sling and an eye to tie a paracord sling onto. This unit is made of tough durable polycarbonate over machined aluminium and has an ultra tough A-frame construction. This stock will not auto-collapse as it has a well designed release and locking mechanism which uses a high quality stainless steel spring. The release lever is placed under the comb of the stock to shield it from accidental actuation.
The contours have been kept smooth to avoid catching on equipment etc. Three depths of recoil pad are avaliable – the commercial comes with a 55mm, the military with a 30mm and there is a 70mm option. There are also three heights of comb risers available, but these can only be used on the AR15 with the stock fully extended – please check that they will work with whatever weapon you intend to purchase them for before ordering.
The next model up in the range is the Magpul CTR stock or ‘Compact/Restricted Tactical’. This is essentially the MOE with an additional, self tightening friction locking mechanism that makes the stock completely rigid when locked. QD swivels are catered for with a push button mount. You need to check your weapon’s buffer tube diameter – milspec models fit military 1.14″ OD buffer tubes and commercial models civilian 1.17″ buffer tubes. They are both available in four different colors to suit various terrains and scenarios. These stocks are very simple to fit and will do so without breaching military regulations – this is not the case with their ‘Utility Battle Rifle’ or UBR stock.
The Magpul UBR stock is a big jump up in capability offering a user selected LOP position chosen from seven by positioning a set screw. This stock has two push-button QD swivel mounting points that you can change from side to side, but ambidextrous versions are an option. This unit provides totally consistent cheek weld as the cheek piece does not telescope with the butt. The Magpul UBR is built to take the recoil of larger calibres shot off the AR15 platform and provides additional counterweight of 1.63lb to the heavy, bull barrels found on these and other sniper platforms and for carbines fitted with heavy accessories toward the front.
Magpul have thoughtfully provided a box for small items in the middle of the stock which locks securely. This gives you the option of packing a bore-snake etc. It detaches, enabling you to achieve the ‘skeletonized’ look for your weapon. Once again, smooth lines prevent fouling and the lever is protected from accidental actuation. The multi layer construction protects internal components from dirt and sand ingress. The need for an entry length receiver extension means it it is unlikely that you will be allowed to put one of these on your issue weapon. Prerequisites include an M4 buffer and spring (not included) and some 7.62X51 platforms will need a shorter buffer and spring.
These stocks are intended for general purpose use on AR series rifles, but can be fitted to any weapon which allows their use, including (in the case of the MOE and CTR) bolt action rifles from Remington and Howa and shotguns. Magpul also offers sniper specific AR stocks which I will cover in a future article.
