Knife Damascus

Remove Scratches from a knife blade?
I have a large Damascus steel knife. The blade has been heavily scratched by someone trying to remove a light layer of rust from one of the sides with sand paper. How would i go about removing the scratches without using any machinery?
Since you mentioned that it was heavily scratched..I doubt that a buffing wheel would work anyway as they aren’t really designed to remove scratches. They are designed to refine finishes.
Unfortunately; from the sound of your question, I would think you would have to handsand it over again and hope that it doesn’t ruin the blades etching. (Which is how pattern wielded steel’s pattern becomes visible) To be on the safe side-I would try to remove them by trying a finer grit.
But if that doesn’t work-then you’re going have to start from coarser grits and work your way towards finer grits and risk the chance of messing up the blades etching if any and its grind lines if you’re not careful. (Or even the finish itself if you’re not familiar with hand sanding) Since the blade was finished before-what I would do is try starting at 220,move to 300, then to 400,etc. Only change grits when all the scratches from the previous are out and if you’re satisfied by how it looks after the 220 gets the problem scratches out then stop there. This is easier then it sounds so you do risk making it worse so keep this in mind.
