IM STUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Here’s the beginning of my book, i want it to have something to do with black mail. I dont have alot but could you tell me what you think and give me some ideas:
The letter arrived in the middle of the night, no return address, just an envelope with Lana written on the front in cursive. She was hesitant to open it as letters were rare in Columbia, ever since the war. Lana lived in one of the last remaining cities, with only a few hundred people. Homes were far apart and almost no one would walk so many miles just to deliver a letter. She thought it might be from the Headquarters but then it would be delivered by an executive, not just left on her door step. After considering what to do for at least an hour, her curiosity won her over. She took a plastic knife and opened the yellowed envelope. Inside there were 2 pieces of clean white paper.
Please only constructive critisism.
P.S. Im 12 years old, but still judge it as if i were 20
It’s a good start, and I can see why your character is hesitating in opening the letter, but I think not opening it and thinking over it for an hour makes it seem like she has nothing better to do. It gives the reader a feeling that Lana is considering that there is something fishy about the letter. I see that you said that letters were rare in Columbia after the war, but I don’t think it is something worth thinking about for an hour. Get me? I think it might be better if you make her curious and hesitant but she opens it anyway. And if you want her to wait an hour, make her get distracted and then remember about the letter later on. And then that would be when she would open it. If she hesitates too much, it might make it feel like she is expecting to be blackmailed. But other than that, good writing! It’s cool that you are into writing at the age of 12!
