Knife Jigged
How do I put together my grind to fit butt pad?

I have a marlin MR-7, with a grind to fit butt pad because the original pad was a quarter inch and hard as a rock. I have been using the pad and I love it… but I haven’t ground it down to fit yet so it looks like crap. I have minimal tools, i was hoping someone could give me some tips on what to do. Online all the instructions say to use jigs and stuff but i don’t have any of that. I at least need to know what kind of tape to use to protect my finish while I sand the pad and what kinds of sand paper to use, I would be content with using my pocket knife to shave off the rubber and eyeball it if i need to.

I will add one tip that I learned from an old time gunsmith, and I use it every time I fit a butt stock or recoil pad to a long gun. Freeze the butt pad/recoil pad first. I mean freeze it good, for at least 24 hours before you start fitting it. They are much easier to shape and work on that way. In fact, the difference is like night and day. I use 3 wrappings of paper tape to protect the actual stock. Go slow and take your time, there is no hurry. Don’t trace the old pad as a pattern, most pads have different centers and you will end up with a mess doing it that way. Don’t do it my way from there, I use a belt sander with a medium grit to start with and work down to a finer grit as it gets closer to finished. But it is easy to damage the stock if you don’t have a really light touch. For you, it would be better to use a sanding block that fits your hand properly. Remember too, that if you make a mistake, they are easily fixed. If you have any doubts, go ahead and pay a gunsmith to do it. Remember too that if you are adding a longer butt pad to it, you may have to cut your stock down a bit so it will still fit and shoulder properly. And if that is the case, pay to have it done right cuz although easy to remove wood, it is tough to add it back and make it look right..
