How do you use a Spear Gun?

Speargun Fishing is quite simple, and a lot of fun. To use a speargun, you feed the spear into the gun, and you pull the rubber (s) back and hook them into the spear. If you are using an air powered gun then it needs to be pumped so that it is loaded. From there, you take the safety off, and press the trigger when you get near a fish that is good for eating. The spear is released from the Speargun and flies outwards into the fish. Ideally it will go through the fish, and then the barb on the spear opens up so the fish can’t slide off the end.

From then, you pull the fish in towards you, grab hold of it and use a knife to kill it. Of course, things get a bit more complicated when you are using a Spearfishing Float or Reel, when you are shooting bigger fish or when you are trying to find fish! A speargun is quite simple, but they are incredibly dangerous if you use them correctly. They should always be treated as a loaded gun, and kept well away from other people. Spearfishing should be done with a partner of similar experience, to ensure that you both stay safe. Take it in turns to dive down, so that if something does go wrong the person on the top can pull you out of the water! Spearguns vary considerably in size, number of rubbers, set up for bringing fish in, materials used for the line, bungies and in a few other ways. If you want to get into this great sport, its a good idea to start off with a cheap gun and work your way up until you are confident enough to become a Blue Water Hunter! This is truly a great sport, but it needs to be done safely and with a bit of thought!
