Knife Whittler
What kind of knife to use for whittling?
I’m a first time whittler 
Any pocket knife (we used to call it a jack knife) will do. Find one that feels good in your hand. Just make sure it doesn’t have a stainless steel blade, which won’t keep an edge for long.
More important is your choice of wood. You want something on the softer side. Pine woods are soft, but tend to splinter, making it difficult to get finer details. I don’t like pine. Hardwoods like apple and cherry are bad choices. Maple, oak, birch and cedar aren’t soft, but not as hard as others, and you can work with them. Balsa and basswood are some of the easiest to work with, but you’re not going to be able to find them in the wild.
