Protect and Serve Feature Go Bags
In the age of the active shooter, it is essential that law enforcement officers prepare themselves for encounters both on and off the job. Despite some officer’s hesitation to get involved in off duty incidents, it is imperative to have some basic items with you off duty in the event you are forced into a situation such as an active shooter.
A small backpack that blends in is a good idea in order to avoid targeting yourself as the guy with the tactical bag. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what is in your bag when it is covered with tactical patches and molle straps. A good quality camping back pack in a normal color serves just fine. Some of the essential items needed are a firearm, extra ammo, small flashlight, disposable cuffs, which are great because they are light weight and compact; other items such as a tourniquet and an anti-coagulant product to help in the event you are wounded. If it is possible and not too cumbersome, a ballistic panel inserted into your bag could save your life.
Any go bag is a good one as long as you make it comfortable enough that you will actually carry it and that you carry essential items that will prepare you for some of the possible challenges of an active shooter. The more tactical go bags can be reserved for on duty purposes, which should include extra rifle magazines if you have a patrol rifle and officer rescue supplies such as a smoke grenade, carabiners, and at least 25 to 30 feet of rope or nylon strapping.
The main point with a go bag is that you should have one, just in case.
