Why won’t this knife sharpen?
I’ve had this knife (Meyerco Camp USA Blackie Collins 440 steel) for a while, and I’ve tried sharpening it with wet stones, ceramics, and a kitchen knife sharpener, with no luck. I’ve considered that maybe I’m just doing something wrong, but I have/had other knives with 440 blades and I’ve sharpened them easily. I know there are different types of 440, but should that make that much of a difference? It doesn’t say what type it is, just that it is. I also can’t find any information on the knife, since I don’t have a model name or number for it.
There could be several reasons for this. The first; the 440 stainless is really 440A which is the lowest quality of the 440′s. That along with improper heat treating make large carbides that make getting a razor edge nearly impossible. The second; defective geometry. The angle of the edge is too steep for a razor edge to exist. This is usually the case as the cheaper steels and defective geometry usually go together as the cheap steel cant be ground thin enough because it is too weak. As for hardness of 440, it’s a myth. 440C, the highest quality, fully hardened is only 59 rockwell but at this hardness it is brittle so they usually draw it back to 57r. To put it in perspective my knives usually run 60r and take an edge very easily. The difference is grain structure, a fine grain=greater edge strength and sharpness potential.
