Mock Fly

How do you return a hand- raised mocking bird to the wild?
Me and my family raised a baby mocking bird and it’s now an adult, we can’t afford a bigger cage and shes shitting everywhere. She can eat, fly, and she has territorial instincts, but how do we SAFELY return her to the wild?
First, congrats on rehabilitating a bird successfully since so many people do not know how to properly raise one. Birds are actually pretty easy to release as long as it is not overly attached to humans. First, make sure it will go after live insects. Some human-raised birds won’t at first. If it does know to catch/eat live prey, it is good to go.
Simply take the bird somewhere away from roads and other human danger areas, open its flight cage (or whatever you’re using to carry it) and wait for it to fly out on its own. Since it is a mockingbird, it would probably be better if you released it somewhere with tall trees or other tall objects since they usually perch on (and in the male’s case, sing from) the tallest spot they can find. If you choose to release in a wooded area, do it toward the outer edges of the forest since mockingbirds also prefer relatively open spaces. Other than that, there isn’t much more you can do for the bird. They usually have great instincts, so I’m sure it will be fine. Good luck!
