Multi Tools
Leatherman multi-tool or knife as a gift for someone going into the army?

Many people suggest buying a Leatherman as a gift for someone in the army. Which model would be preferred? Would a multi-tool or a knife be more useful? Should I give it to them before they join, or send it while they are in training? Thank you.
(I have the Leatherman Wave in mind.)

If you go the multi-tool route, make sure it’s a Leatherman or a Victorinox SwissTool. The tools from Gerber, SOG and all the other manufacturers just aren’t anywhere near as high in quality or functionality in my experience. Personally I prefer the SwissTool as all the tools have spring backs, so they don’t clump together, and they’re also made from a more rust resistant steel. Leatherman is also a great choice though, having a much better blade and screwdriver design (although you only get the better designed ones on the most expensive models; the ‘basic’ Leatherman’s are a very outdated, inferior design).

If you go the knife route, it depends how much you want to spend as to what I would recommend, but without knowing your price range, I’ll just say that the Spyderco Military (and smaller Para-Military) as well as the RAT Cutlery RC-3 and RC-4 are pretty damn good, being designed with military personnel in-mind.

EDIT: I think the Wave is an excellent choice.
