Is the diet im feeding my 10 month old pitbull all good?
i have a 10 month old rednose pitbull. he only eats raw food (which i want anyway) i just need to know what else he might need other than what im feeding him at the moment. Currently im feeding him chicken carcus’s and either chicken, ox or lamb hearts. that means the diet includs bone, meat and organs. am i missing anything. what else do i need to throw in his diet for him to be healthy as possible. thax heaps
What you are doing is good. I would give some different meat form different animals. Like some beef or lamb. Heart is considered a muscle meat, give some liver or kidney as organ. You can also buy Offal from some stores or a butcher. It is basically ground organs and sometimes glands.
Variety is important for dogs. If you only feed a few meat sources, there can be some nutritional deficiencies. Different meats is good. You can give fish, eggs and some oils to help your dog.
Dogs do not need veggies (although you can give some if you want), and they should not have grains. Meat (and bones and organs) should be the majority of your dogs diet. If you want to give veggies, don’t give more than about 10% of the total diet. You could give some carrot or something as a treat.
Some people use supplements. This can include oils or pills. You don’t have to unless you feel like you need to or there is an issue. A multivitamin can be a good idea. Ask you vet for a recommendation and what it should contain.
As you have a puppy, you need to make sure he is getting the right amount of food. The general rule is 2-3% of the ideal adult weight. For puppies is can be as much as 5-10% of the current weight. If your puppy is growing at a good rate (not too fast or slow) then you are doing good. You should weight your puppy at least once a month and adjust the amount of food accordingly.
Having a vet who supports your choice of diet is a good idea. They can help you with the amount and what to feed.
