Was there any point in history when the frontierspeople of the U.S. mistook the Great Salt Lake for d Pacific?
Just wondering, because we’re discussing in class about the Manifest Destiny. I’m just curious…were there any written records about any so-and-so of American past mistaking the Great Salt Lake for the Pacific?? Anyway….thanks!
Jim Bridger, a member of General William Ashley’s Upper Missouri Expedition, was one of the first European Americans to discover the Great Salt Lake.
To settle a bet in the winter camp of his trapping party of 1824, Bridger set out to find the exact course of the Bear River from the Cache Valley, which he traveling in a bull boat to explore. He returned and reported that it emptied into a vast lake of salt water. The men were convinced he had found an arm of the Pacific Ocean.
It was disproved when trappers found they could walk around it.
