Primos Knife
I need help from professional clarinet players!?

Hello. I am in 8th grade, in my fifth year of the B flat Clarinet, and all of my reeds are awful! I either sacrifice tone, or the ability to play in the upper register. I have developed terrible aggressive tonguing, and I would love to know what others do. I tried Van Dorens, they didn’t work, as well as Ricos and Rico Royals. I’m using Primos, but they don’t make 4′s which I need. Reed knives? Reed clippers? Make your own? Or, the dreaded word, PLASTIC REEDS? Help me please! I need to stay first chair!
My reed isn’t too hard, it’s too soft, even my teacher says so! I’m getting to the point where I’ll do anything, even the process that was just posted. Thanks!

It’s been a while since I’ve played reeds (I majored on sax and clarinet in music school/college), but I would soak them for a bit and then polish them, rub them on a smooth surface, which helped. Here’s a link that describes the process, even if I think it’s a little overboard:
