What’s the difference between a submachine gun and an assault rifle?
I have heard that submachine guns fire bullets designed for a hand gun where assault rifles use a larger cartridge. If this is true, what type of weapons do SWAT teams or special forces use when they have operations that are indoors? Wouldn’t assault rifles be too loud or cumbersum indoors and submachine guns not pack a lot of punch should they have a fire fight out of doors?
A sub-machine gun is basically a long gun chambered in a pistol caliber. Guns like the H&K MP5 was chambered in 10mm auto and 9mm luger or the FN P90 chambered in FN 5.7. The pistol calibers have less recoil than most rifle calibers. It actually doen’t refer to the barrel length.
An assault rifle, generally is merely an automatic or burst fire rifle fed by magazines. The US military standard issue is a M4, with a 14.5″ barrel. The M16′s they used to issue had a 20″ barrel. The 5.56Nato round is a fairly weak round that uses pretty fast burning powders and the extra barrel doesn’t effect the velocity of the round as much as other rounds. In other words, the extra 5.5″ of barrel are a lot of length and weight for very little gain in terms of velocity and the Army did away with it.
You’ll see a lot of SWAT teams and special forces use rifles and submachine guns with barrels as short as 10″ or shorter because the indoor environement really hurts the longer guns. The pistol rounds are not as powerful, but shoot bigger, slower rounds which cannot penetrate regular kevlar vests (rifles can penetrate them with ease). Pistol rounds don’t have the ballistics that rifle rounds do. 100-150 yards and you are lobbing rounds.
Both are very loud while inside.
