Campground Walkie Talkies/Radios?
I am frequently canoeing a series of backwoods lakes off of a highway in Northern Canada. The first lake is narrow with a bend almost 2 km long, and my usual campsite is just out (maybe 2 degrees) of line of sight from the portage route off of the highway.
I would like to have a pair of walkie talkies (one for the camp, and one to leave on the far shore) so that people could contact me to row over and pick them up. My question is; will the walkie talkies in stores which advertise 4km line-of-sight range work for me? There is literally only a ten foot outcropping of rock at the halfway point narrows, blocking line of sight.
What are your experiences with using less-than-quality (20-60 dollar) walkie talkie sets?
Also, what are good brands to use for deep camping (say 10-30km through heavy bush and hills?)
I have used 2mi models through thick woods for about 8 years now and they work great. I get all the range that I need which is probably just under 2 miles. I have Cobra’s that I bought in 1999 or 2000 for about $40 each.
Get the name brand and the best you can afford. I have also had good luck with Motorola. I do know some people who have bought other names and they look and work like toys.
At todays prices, you should be fine in the $25ea and up vicinity.
