where can i find a good combat knife & how to sharpen really old knifes?

my father gave me a combat knife that he got in the military ( he was in the 82nd airborne ). but anywho when i was 14 he gave me this combat knife. it has a 4 inch blade maybe a little less. with a serrated back . well yesterday my dad gave me the knife he used. it has a 4 1/2 inch blade and a triangle serrated back. yeah so the blade is really unsharp and no matter what i do i cant get it sharp. any help ? also where can i find a really nice new combat knife.
im already a grate sharpener. it just this knife is like 24 years old and it hasnt been out of its sheath in 20 years.

A good knife is made of hard steel so that it holds an edge longer. The problem is that if you let them get completely dull, it is a pain getting a new edge established. Don’t let someone use an electric grinder as this effects the strength of the steel and can give you a brittle edge. Get a rough stone and a smooth stone. Read the instructions or google knife sharpening to learn the proper way to move the knife. I am not going to write a book. The rough stone gets the edge on, and the fine stone is used to give it a smooth glass finish. It takes work, patience and elbow grease.

As far as finding a fighting knife it all depends on what you want to spend. You can look at sites like cheaperthandirt.com, or for finer stuff look at cold steel knives. Good luck.
