Make Perfect Cuts With Mitre Boxes – ToolsRUs
Especially useful when cutting wood for frames or moulding, mitre boxes are an indispensable tool in any woodworker’s shop. Simple yet ingenious, a mitre box is not really a box at all. It is more like a tray with a bottom and two sides. Mitre boxes will take a beating, but there are certain types you can purchase designed to withstand excessive wear and tear. You can even build you own mitre box and save a little money.
Basically, a mitre box allows you to cut boards at precisely 90 or 45 degrees, sometimes other angles as well. When building a picture frame or installing moulding or baseboards, absolute precision is a must. The box or tray will hold a board of a certain width perfectly secure as you cut through it using a hand saw. The box features vertical slots cut into the sides that guide your saw and keep it precisely in line to make the angled cut.
A horizontal piece of wood or hard plastic is the base piece of a mitre box. Attached to each of its long ends are vertical side boards. Thus, both the ends and top are open. From the side, a mitre box looks like a “C” but with squared sides. Slots are cut into both side boards. Most types have three cuts per side. The slots on each side are as follows: two 45-degree slots facing opposite directions and a single 90-degree slot positioned perpendicular to the length of the box. The 45-degree angle slots in the side closest to you when making a cut are closer together than their respective slots in the far side. This design allows a saw to move freely through both sides when making 45-degree cuts.

Mitre box materials include cast aluminium, moulded plastic and wood. The latter two materials are built to last longer than wood, as frequent sawing eventually cuts into the wood boxes themselves. A wood box may feature metal runners or guides to increase its lifespan. The saw most commonly used with a mitre box is the backsaw.
Today, however, many woodworkers choose to use an electric mitre saw instead of the handheld variety. However, they are useful tool in a pinch.
