A Future Set in Steel
While health concerns weigh heavily on the minds of many Americans who are edging closer toward retirement, Danny Lyles of Athens, TN made the conscious decision to invest in his future peace of mind and mobility now as opposed to later.
“I decided to build the SteelMaster house because I am now 50 years old, not an antique yet, but I have had some health issues in the past,” says Lyles. “I wanted a new house with all new ‘stuff’ in it, so if I have health troubles down the road hopefully I won’t have to be working on the house. My present house has steps to climb to get in it. The SteelMaster house is built at ground level so it is far easier to get into, especially if I have mobility troubles later on.”
SteelMaster Buildings, which is located in Virginia Beach, VA, manufactures Steel and Metal Pre-engineered Buildings which are designed for a broad range of residential and commercial applications, including housing.

Lyles is in the process of building his home, which will feature a living room/kitchen combo with 10′ ceilings and two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry/utility room, all of which will have 8′ ceilings. The house itself will be 40′ wide x 60′ long and set on a flat concrete floor which will give it a 16′ ceiling height in the center. The front wall is inset 3′ and the rear wall is inset 1′.
Lyles is currently living in a ‘conventional’ house which is 1400 sq. ft. and located on the same piece of property as the new SteelMaster house. “We started building the SteelMaster house about eight months ago—the ‘shells’ went up in about a month and the shop was completed in two weeks after that,” says Lyles. “Last week we started on the house inside wood framing, but we are in no hurry to complete the house since I still have a good house to live in.”
Lyles says one of his favorite aspects of the house is the insulation. “It could be called a super insulated house,” says Lyles. “I put 2″ foam board under the concrete floor, sprayed in foam insulation on the inside of the SteelMaster ‘shell’ , and the end walls are 2″ x 6″ wood framed with spray foam on the inside and foam board on the outside with a metallic type of house wrap covered with shake looking vinyl siding on both ends. The house has three windows—two in the front wall and one in the rear wall.”
In addition to the house, Lyles has already built a SteelMaster workshop/garage which sits 4′ below the house on a two-block high knee wall and is 40′x40′ with an 18′ ceiling height in the center. He stores all of his metal working/welding equipment in the building as well as his tractor and lawnmower.

Lyles says that so far, he is very pleased with his decision to purchase both SteelMaster Buildings. “They look cool, seem to be constructed o.k., and should last as long as ‘I’ will most likely need them,” says Lyles.
