US $5 Gold Coins

Th US $5 Eagle is a gold coins measured in troy ounces. This coins worth is averaged at about 145 US Dollars in July of 2010. The modern American Gold Eagle coin was first minted in 1986; The gold eagles minted between 1986 and 1991 use Roman numberal data and those minted after 1992 have arabic dates. The coins must have the amount of gold stated in the their troy ounces but also contain other elements to make them more wear resistant. The coins have been authorized by the Congress of the United States Mint to guarantee the weight and content.

Design

Originally, the design used for the $5 American Eagle coin was the same as that used for the original $20 gold coin that ceased production in 1933; the design is by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and even though similar to the original $20 gold piece, the United States mint nonetheless decided to use it for its new American Gold Eagle coin, on the reverse. (The $20 American Eagle gold coin had its first minting in 1907 and was in general circulation until 1933.)

Now the $5 gold eagles resemble the older $20 gold coin. On the front, Lady Liberty stands with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand, with the Capitol in full view behind her to the left. On the back, a bald eagle carries an olive branch in its mouth and flies above a nest with a female eagle and “little eagles” therein.

Many people know about the statue of liberty but not so much about the eagle.

The eagle is the United States’ national emblem, originally chosen on June 20, 1782. It was chosen to represent America in part because it was thought to exist only on the North American continent. And it represents freedom. As the story goes that the sounds of one of the first battles of the Revolution woke up the eagles and the eagles flew over head during the battle. The Patriots are said to have stated, “They are shrieking for Freedom.”

Because of this, the eagle remains a prominent symbol of America, its freedoms, and all they stand for.

In addition to its design with a bald eagle as a centerpiece, the $5 gold piece also contains other information, including the amount of gold in the coin, how pure it is, and its face value at the time of minting (this changes day to day, as the market itself changes). Today’s American Eagle coins were first minted in 1986, and are only made from gold mined in the United States.

Legal tender?

The $5 eagle can indeed be spent as a $5 coin. But it would not makes sense to do so since its actual value is much more. Instead, it’s kept as a collector’s item.
