What’s the proper way to use a knife in combat?
How should I hold said knife and what type of stance should I take? Should I treat it like a sword and use a generic fencing stance (turned to the side, unarmed hand on hip, etc.)? Or maybe have the other hand ready and use the knife in conjunction with a fist?
Let’s say it’s a typical Victorinox “Huntsman” Swiss Army knife. However, I wouldn’t mind learning how to handle different types of knives and/or daggers either. Anyone with like… military or martial arts (namely Eskrima) experience have any tips? (:
Don’t worry, I’m not homicidal, I promise! Not gonna go around stabbing folks. It’s just for curiosity’s sake.
We used knives to open C-Rats mostly. They can probably be used to open an MRE package with good results.
The way Marines are taught to stand is with your dominant leg forward and your knife parallel to the ground. Yes, it is like a fencing stance but, not with your other hand on your hip. You are taught thrusts, jabs, and parries.
There is a lot more to knife fighting than the stance. We had a knife fighting course which was taught by a Filipino. You won’t learn how to fight with a knife without being taught by an expert.
If you are in the Army and get into hand-to-hand, the first person who has a friend arrive with a rifle wins. In the Marines you better know how to dispatch an enemy on your own.
– I’m trying to imagine Dylan’s explanation. I have my weight forward slightly on my left foot with my chest turned to my right. Then what do I do, ask for the next instruction in the game of Twister? You don’t stand with your left foot forward if you are right-handed.
