Periodontal Treatment to Stop Gum Disease
Gum disease is an increasingly common affliction for any adults. Studies indicate that 40-80% of adults have gum disease, and many are not even aware of the problem. This often silent disease can have an affect on heart health, diabetes, and even be related to stroke. Periodontal treatment is a common way to deal with gum disease, but those treatments don’t need to be costly and painful.
Gum disease is reversible if caught at an early stage. During this period, symptoms include very little swelling or pain. Gums may bleed a bit when brushed and flossed, but otherwise you are not aware of any problem. At this stage, home administered periodontal treatment is most effective. Unfortunately, even the best intentioned brushing and flossing may not prevent the beginnings of gum disease. Since gum disease actually occurs below the gum line, it can happen to anyone.
Once gum disease progresses to periodontitis, things get more complicated. Calculus has already been deposited in pockets forming below the original gum line, and those deposits will grow without proper maintenance. These pockets develop infections fed by the bacteria within the calculus. Dentists and periodontists will perform deep cleanings and root scaling to remove the accumulated material, and in severe cases even surgery may be necessary. Treatments at the office can be very expensive and require many visits. All this can be prevented by utilizing periodontal treatments early, and it can even be done at home.
After the calculus has been removed and the gums have time to heal, they will often recover to some degree. Continued good care at home will assist the healing process and prevent further infection of the gum tissues. Bone loss can be reversed in time and teeth can be maintained, improving your appearance and outlook. Periodontal treatment, done properly, can be an important part of your overall health.
